Monthly Projects
THE HOPE OF HEARING
-
The United Methodist Men of
East Asheville United Methodist Church recently
adopted this program to become one of their on-going projects. It is
their hope and prayer that everyone will join with them in this
opportunity to help change the lives of children with hearing problems
in Haiti..
How does this program work? Hope
of Hearing has a special relationship with Starkey Foundation which is
supported by Starkey Laboratories which is one of the largest
manufactures of hearing aids in the world. Hope of Hearing sends the old
hearing aids to Starkey and they in turn sell reconditioned hearing aids
to the Hope of Hearing. The more used hearing aids sent in reduces the
cost to Hope of Hearing.
Who benefits from the
hearing aids? Gil Hanke, who is a speech/language pathologist, takes
a team of audiologists to Haiti each year to test and fit hearing aids
on the school children there. For those who do not have access to old
hearing aids, they can make cash donations, which will be used to buy
impression material and other supplies which are needed.
How can you be of help? Simply
by contacting anyone you know who has a hearing problem, wears hearing
aids, and may have an old hearing aid stuck back in a drawer in their
house. You can donate these old hearing aids to Bob Hunsucker-Haze
at East Asheville UMC by calling him at his home 828-253-1107, or sending an email
to
bobby6@charter.net. He will make the necessary
arrangements to collect these hearing aids.
Hope of Hearing is one of the
mission projects supported nationally by the United Methodist Men.
