Asheville
United Methodist Church was organized in May 1961 in response to a new
housing development being launched at Parkway Forest in Oteen.
The white frame house that had been the B.C. Brown home, with five acres
of land, was purchased by the District Mission Society to be used for
the new church. The first service was held in this house on Sunday
evening, May 7, 1961 at 7:30 PM.
In June
1961, the Rev. E. Vaudry Williams was assigned as the first full time
pastor. The church began with 19 charter members and grew to 104 members
in the first year.
A new sanctuary was built in 1963. The white tram house continued to be
used as the Sunday School building and fellowship hall until the present
Educational Building and Fellowship Hall were built.
In 1968 The Methodist Church and The Evangelical United Brethren Church
merged to form the United Methodist Church.
Since its early humble beginnings Oteen United Methodist Church has
continued to grow and prosper. Today you will see, as you visit our
Website, that we offer many unique ways to worship and serve our Lord.
We hope you will want to come and share in our work.
